3 Important Facebook Page Updates!
Facebook has been releasing some amazing tools for businesses lately… and it makes sense because now that their public… and their revenue comes from advertising… they need to continuously step it up in order to please their shareholders.
Luckily for all of us, we now have access to incredible targeting options within the new Facebook ad platform… Power Editor!
We can create custom audiences now which can be used in a variety of different ways. For example, you can login to your email service like aweber, mailchip, office auto pilot, infusionsoft etc… download to a .csv file your email list and upload it to Facebook.
Facebook will then go out and match the emails with user profiles. Then you can create an ad that only show to those users! This is powerful! There’s many many more things that can be done within the Power Editor, that was just to name a few.
In this post we’re going to talk about the 3 recent updates Facebook announced and how they relate to us.
3 Important Facebook Page Updates
Facebook Page Update #1. Embedded Posts: We can now embed any post from our Facebook Fan Page onto our blog or website! All thats needed is to click on the “little down arrow” at the top right of your posts… and then you can access the embed code.

Facebook Page Update #2. Contests Just Became A Ton Easier And FREE To Run
Facebook removed the old requirement requiring brands to run contests only through a 3rd party app using a custom tab on your page! This is huge! Or is it?! This means you can now run a legit contest on Facebook by simply asking users to “Like” a post, comment on a post, or direct messages to brands via the message center.
Even though you may have seen contests being run this way before, they were actually breaking the rules and risking losing their Fan Page. However, not any more!
With this all being said, it’s important to remember that building your email list is always #1. Yes we can now… in a matter of seconds… throw out a quick contest on our Facebook page. And I believe it’s a good idea to experiment with these type of quick contests or sweepstakes.
You could do something like… the first 10 people who comment on this post are going to receive ___. Or, comment here and you’ll be entered into the contest to win ____ That’s cool for sure. However, you won’t be able to build your list running a Facebook contest this way.
So, I suggest finding the perfect balance that works for you and remember contests and sweepstakes are a great way to build buzz around your brand and build good will in the market place as well as build your list. Here’s a cool new free app from Woobox that allows you to pick winners and export “likes” and comments on Facebook posts. - Choose the Facebook Fan Page in the list of pages on the left that you want to install this tab on
- At the top of the page, click on “posts”
- Chose the post you want to pick the contest winner from
- Scroll under the post you chose and click on “Pick Winner”

Facebook Page Update #3. Facebook Changes News Feed Algorithm
Facebook is changing what they believe to be “High Quality Content” and this will effect what kind of engagement we will get on our Fan pages based on the content we post.

It’s starting to look like the old ways of asking for someone to “Like” our posts or “Share” if they agree may be on their way out. More we be told in the coming months. As marketers, we know the important of using a call-to-action (CTA).
There’s no doubt that it works to increase clicks. However, it appears that it was being abused by some marketers (of course) and some users started to complain.
Bullet point 5 seems to be a little off to me, in regards to memes. Does that mean picture posts too? The answer isn’t clear yet. We shall see what happens moving forward and I wanted you to be aware of whats going on right now. Continue to look at your insights to gage how your posts are performing.

One More Thing…
Be aware of is that now when Facebook users “Like” your page, Facebook delivers them “Suggested Pages” to Like as well. This isn’t really a good thing for us, or is it? We don’t want our brand new Facebook fan to get distracted and diverted from our Facebook page… … and at the same time our page will also be suggested to users that like similar pages.
What can we do?
Facebook gives Fan pages the option to turn this feature on and off!. So far what I’ve found between my own pages, and all the pages I’m an admin for… is that the default setting is set to on.
Meaning your page is part of this feature by default. It’s is a toss up at this point, and I can’t say I have the answer on what’s the best option at this time.
If you want to turn this feature off, you can follow the simple instructions below.
How to turn this feature off
1. Click on the “Update Page Info” button next to the Like button on your Fan page 2. Click on “Settings” 3. Scroll down to “Similar Page Suggestions” click edit… and make sure the check box is “un-checked”
